Are you one of those who dare to jump into the unknown, seeking for challenge and adventure? Do you think that you can overcome many obstacles in front of you and keep moving toward the goal? Are you ready to face your fear of height and jump from a cliff into the river?
If yes, than you’ll get hooked to canyoning!
EXTREME AND BEAUTIFUL
Canyoning is the ultimate adrenaline experience. It is all about making your way through gorge created by river through thousands of years. Depending on the canyon you will need to use various techniques like walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping from the rocks, abseiling the cliffs, swimming, and so on… It’s a wet business, but you’re equipped with a tough wetsuit that provides warmth and a useful amount of padding. Untouched nature, crystal clear stream that flows through narrow passage, virgin wildlife, waterfall, cascades, steep tall cliff, beautiful Jacuzzi carved in a rock; all that is found there and that’s what differs canyoning from other outdoor experiences!
CANYONING IN MONTENEGRO
Montenegro is small country in Western Balkan and is known for its mountains, rivers and lakes. With so many small canyons scattered all over the country there are some great places to go canyoning in Montenegro. In recent years few canyons became very popular among those who love adrenaline in their veins. Adventurers from all over the world are witnessing unspoiled beauty of those masterpieces of Nature.
The most popular canyon in Montenegro undoubtedly is Nevidio canyon. Situated in North of the country, between Nikshic and Zabljak city, Nevidio held an epithety of “The last undiscovered canyon in Europe” for a long time. Ice cold water, unhostile terrain, and lack of adequate equipment caused first few attempts to “conquer” this canyon to fail. Finally, in 1965 a group of Montenegrin mountaineers have made their way through. Not to mention that equipment they have had at that time was far from suitable for freezing water in the canyon. It took 2 days until they triumphantly appeared 3.5km downstream. Today, their names are proudly displayed at the entrance in the canyon, keeping their tremendous endeavor from oblivion.
Nowadays, with proper equipment and professional guides Nevidio can be explored by almost everyone. Passing through usually takes 3-4 hours and consists of jumping into the crystal pools from several meters in height, swimming through cuts, diving, descending down the cliffs and waterfalls…all that enriched with high dose of adrenaline! Seeing this pearl of Nature is not to be missed!
CANYONING NEAR THE SEA
For those who stay in southern Montenegro there is no better canyon to visit than Medjurjecki potok. With 10 abseils ranging from three to even 30m in height this is a place for adrenaline junkies! Few abseils must be descended with a safety rope, while the most of them give extraordinary opportunity for a crazy dive into the river. Medjurjec canyon is located just 15km from Bar and is the only southern canyon that does not dry out even through hottest summers. With pure mountain water, waterfalls, huge vertical drops, deep natural pools, and stunning beauty of the landscape this is one of the most extraordinary places in Montenegro to visit!
Another canyon near Bar is Rikavac. Technically less demanding than Medjurjecki, this canyon is ideal for families and those who are not too extreme. Being technically easier doesn’t mean being less attractive whatsoever.
Close to famous Kotor city is a scenic Skurda canyon. Skurda river starts flowing from Njegusi village on Lovcen mountain. Descending its slopes it flows just behind famous Kotor walls, creating magnificent gorge. Canyon itself is quite long with total vertical descent of staggering 800m! Numerous pools together with 26 waterfalls make this canyon one of the most attractive in Montenegro. Excursions in Skurda canyon can be organized throughout entire year, except in the period of heavy rains, when river gets too strong.
POWERFUL BUT FRAGILE CREATION
Huge expansion of canyoning in Montenegro means more and more people curious to see those hidden gems. Beautiful thing is that everyone understand how important is that we keep those places clean and unspoiled, for some future generations to come.
Even better days for this attractive outdoor activity are yet to come, as many canyons still wait to be discovered and presented as tourist attractions.
