A great group of four French ladies embarked on an 8.4 m long vessel on May, the 27th. The goal was only one. To have a great two day trip through fascinating bay…Bay of Boka!
We left Herceg Novi port on Saturday at 10 am. With a constant 5-6 kts SW breeze we sailed out of the bay, rounding Mamula islet and sailing toward Prevlaka fort. After it, we took SE direction aiming to start exploring the Bay!
Just at the entrance of the bay, on a starboard side, there’s Rose –beautiful, peaceful spot. Nowadays Rose, unfortunately, struggles to resist to the mankind’s irresistible wish for the commodity. More and more concrete houses are rising there. However, Rose is still the favorite place for many people from Herceg Novi and nearby places who wants to run away from summer rush. After having a nice swim, we set sails toward Verige strait. With constant SSW breeze, it took two hours to reach Verige. When you pass this 250m wide channel the two beautiful islands appears; Lady of the Rock and St Marko. Surrounded by magnificent mountains these small islands, together with the Verige strait, have taken a significant part in the rich history of this region. Through the centuries, Boka was invaded by many conquerors of its time.
After rounding the islands, we sailed through calm waters of Risan bay. The decision of mooring the boat over the night in the port of Risan was taken after receiving weather report, which forecasted Bura, a gusty N wind with force up to 35kts. Bura is very well-known and justifiably respected by the sailors at an Adriatic coast. It occurs when cold mountain air from the Continent swoops down to the Mediterranean by steep faces of its mountains.
And the forecast was correct. It was blowing all the night. However, 5 of us had a quite good sleep.
After morning coffee in the local cafe, we walked through the marketplace where people from surrounding villages are selling their organic products, typical for this region. There may be found fruits, vegetables, olive oil, smoked ham, honey, cheese, many handicrafts, etc.
We left Risan at 10.30 and sailed toward Kostanjica, then Perast and DonjiStoliv. After waving to the giant cruise ship that appeared through Verige channel, we sailed toward the Island of Flowers and St Marko, leaving Tivat and Porto Montenegro on the port side. After some nice sailing there, we moored for swimming, lunch and a glass of beer.
Soon was time to set the bow toward our starting point. With decent SW wind Ostrijal we sailed to Herceg Novi, closing our two-day adventure on Sunday at 6 pm.
In two days we have seen a substantial piece of Boka bay. However, with so many fascinating spots, it may take a long time to see its each corner and experience all of its magic!
